Dan Anhalt is a native of Wisconsin and has worked in the private sector for most of his professional career having transitioned to the academic world six years ago. Much of Dan’s 20+ years of professional industry experience has been in the area of Human Resources Management, having managed and directed Employee Relations, Recruiting and Training functions for firms in the Information Technology, Banking, Retail and Insurance Industry.
His academic background includes a Bachelor degree in Human Resources from the University of Wisconsin and a Masters in Adult and Continuing Education, through the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Since completing his Masters degree, Dan has been the Director of Continuing Education for the University of Wisconsin Colleges with responsibilities including management of the Washington County Continuing Education department, and also functions as their statewide Director for Customized Training and Business Development. Within these departments he is responsible for coordinating statewide customized training and research functions.

In addition, he is responsible for all continuing education programs offered through the University of Wisconsin-Washington County including Business Offerings, Customized Training, Enrichment Programs, Domestic and Study Abroad travel, and Youth Programming.

He has taught Human Resources courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Dan also serves on numerous community boards and has been the Executive Director of the West Bend Economic Development Corporation for the past 3 years.

“EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT AND THE BOTTOM LINE”

The turbulence of the economy impacted both employers and employees. Many companies reduced staff hours and increased workloads. Many employees were not only personally impacted, but saw their friends and families affected by the economy as well. Several major studies have found that all this has resulted in a sharp decline in employee engagement, morale, and commitment. Even more concerning is that the top performers are disproportionately affected, with a higher drop in engagement than the other employees. And of equal concern is that the percent of disengaged employees (who actively or passively work against the company by “poisoning the well”) has grown. Since higher engagement is linked with higher productivity, customer service, and profitability, this drop in engagement is occurring at the very time that companies need increased rather than decreased engagement.

Some companies, however, have found ways to maintain engagement even in the face of the recession. MRA has done extensive research to identify the top factors that correlate with employee engagement and a number of national studies have also identified strategies used by companies that have succeeded in maintaining high employee engagement.
